You need to stay in some form of learning until you are aged 18. (You can remain in learning longer).

What is learning?

You can choose from the following:

  • Apprenticeship – where you can earn and learn at the same time.
  • College – where a wide range of courses are offered, related to career aims.
  • School Sixth Form – either at your current school or move to another school.
  • Training – Providers run a range of programmes at all levels.

Can you just take a job?

Only if the company employing you offers:

  • Training towards gaining an accredited qualification as part of an Apprenticeship or
  • Accredited learning alongside your work provided by the employer or the opportunity to enrol on an accredited programme for the equivalent of one day per week.

You also have the option to become self-employed or take a voluntary job for 20 hours or more a week, but this will need to be combined with part-time education or training for one day per week.

Staying in learning longer will not only increase your chances of securing a job with career prospects, it will also help you gain important skills for life.
